A corruption scandal threatens the Indian Prime Minister

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is under fire from critics Friday after the revelation of a new corruption scandal, which has cost the Indian state nearly 27 billion euros in the mining sector. The opposition now requires his resignation and threatened Wednesday, Aug. 22 to block the work of the parliamentary session until the Prime Minister gives up his position.

In a report released Friday, the Auditor General Auditor has accused the state since 2004 have lost billions of dollars in assigning mineral deposits to private groups instead of auctioning. Rather than maximize revenues, the government would have preferred to support the development of the industry by maintaining a low coal prices, ore which contributes to half of the country's energy production.

But the Prime Minister, who has seen his image of "Mr. Clean" already tarnished by several high-profile corruption scandals in his government, he was Minister of coal from 2004 to 2009. So it was under his authority what were granted concessions for mines.

"RECOGNIZE HIS GUILT"

A tenor of Opposition, Arun Jaitley, announced Wednesday that his party, the conservative Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), would obstruct parliamentary work as the head of government, 79, would not present his resignation. "To move forward, the Prime Minister should admit his guilt," he argued.

In 2010, the BJP and its allies in the opposition had blocked a parliamentary session in its entirety, after the revelation of fraudulent sale of mobile phone licenses that had robbed the Treasury of up to $ 39 billion dollars. The scandal led to the resignation of then then the incarceration of telecommunications minister, Andimuthu Raja.

CONCERN FOR INVESTORS

The threat of parliamentary obstruction comes as business and investors eagerly await the announcement of reforms to boost economic growth, which is going wrong. Industrialists fear that all mining concessions are canceled, as was the case following the scandal of phone licenses.
