The Iraqi judiciary sentenced to death in absentia Sunday, September 9th Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, a leading Sunni rulers of the country, for the murder of a lawyer and a general. Private secretary Tariq al-Hashemi, who is also his son, was also sentenced to death.
Justice continued Mr. Hashemi and some members of his bodyguard for 150 charges, including the murder of six judges and several senior officials, including the Director General of the Ministry of National Security. But it is for the murder of a lawyer and General Belassim Talib that he and his secretary were sentenced to death.
"The evidence before the court against Tareq al-Hashemi and (his secretary) Ahmed Qahtan enough to condemn them for two murders," said the presiding judge read the sentence. "The court sentences them to death by hanging," said the magistrate.
Tareq al-Hashemi has taken refuge in Turkey since April. Ankara is opposed to any request for extradition. Vice President denounces months since a procedure for purely political purposes, as part of the conflict between his political family, the Iraqiya bloc dominated by Sunnis, the prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki Shia, he accused of authoritarianism.
