Syria: ICRC president received positive commitments from Assad

The new President of the ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) said, Friday, September 7, he had received positive commitments on the part of President Bashar al-Assad this week in Damascus. However, he stressed the need to wait until these promises are implemented in the coming weeks. Friday, the Syrian capital has been the target of a series of attacks that have killed at least five people.

Peter Maurer has just returned from Syria, after a three-day visit during which he met with President Assad and ministers of foreign affairs, interior, health and reconciliation National. "President Assad has agreed that it is necessary to increase emergency humanitarian assistance in facilitating the entry of emergency that would allow us to intensify our efforts and to respond adequately to the growing needs," Mr. Maurer said in a statement.

"I also met with President Assad of our request to visit all detainees in Syria in connection with current events - the inmates in all institutions, including those run by the security services and those used for interrogation. Assad said he was ready to discuss this issue, "said the ICRC president. "The positive commitments that I received during my meetings will of course be monitored and evaluated in the coming weeks," he said.

The EU UNLOCK VA 50 MILLION AID

The European Commission said on Friday it would release additional humanitarian aid to 50 million euros to help the Syrian civilians trapped in the crisis in the country, announced the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Kristalina Georgieva. The payment of the aid must still be approved by the European Parliament and of the twenty-seven EU governments. This should bring the total contribution of the European Commission to 119 million euros, the EU executive said in a statement.

If we add direct support of states, the assistance provided by the EU to the Syrian population is expected to reach 200 million euros. This is almost half of all international humanitarian aid for victims of the crisis. The EU is far ahead of efforts to respond to the call for additional funds launched by the United Nations.
