Iraq: 20 dead in a series of car bombings

At least twenty people were killed, Sunday, June 16, in a series of car bombings south of Baghdad, officials said medical and security services.

At least seven vehicles exploded Aziziyah and Kut in Wasit province, and in Nasiriya and Basra in the south, also making 56 injured, according to the same sources. The most deadly attacks aimed Kout and Aziziyah.

A Kut, capital of Wasit province, a car bomb exploded outside a restaurant in an industrial area, killing 7 and wounding 15. Another car bomb exploded near a market and a Shiite mosque in the town of Aziziyah, making five dead and 10 wounded. In the port city of Basra, a double car bomb killed five people, including a fireworks attempting to defuse one of these cars.

IRAQ "READY TO EXPLODE"

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks in the immediate but Sunni insurgents, including al-Qaida in Iraq, are regularly targeted Shiite majority in the country, and security forces. Last Monday, a wave of bomb attacks mainly Sunni security forces left at least 73 dead and more than 250 injured.

Iraq knows from the beginning of a resurgence of violence that goes in parallel with the Sunni mobilization against the government dominated by Shiites. Sunnis demanding the departure of the first Shiite minister, Nouri al-Maliki, and the end of the discrimination they consider themselves victims. They feel particularly excessive how justice and security forces use terrorism legislative arsenal against them.

In May, more than 1,000 people died in the attacks, according to the United Nations. Their representative in the country, Martin Kobler, has also estimated that Iraq was "ready to explode" and reconnect with the sectarian conflict in 2006-2007.
