Communal violence in Burma, an international tragedy

Aung San Suu Kyi on Thursday called for "huge international tragedy" the deadly violence between Buddhists and Muslims in western Burma and called for greater control of the border with Bangladesh.

Asked on the news channel NDTV, former dissident became opposition leader, visiting India, did not wish to speak on behalf of the minority Muslim Rohingyas who live on both sides of the border , in an effort to promote reconciliation after the violence.

Clashes between Buddhists and Muslims killed at least 180 people since June in Rakhine State (western Burma) and more than 110,000 displaced people, mostly Rohingya, considered by the UN as one of the most persecuted minorities the planet. Thousands of homes were burned.

"WORKING FOR RECONCILIATION"

"Do not forget the violence were committed by both sides, which is why I prefer not to take a position and I want to work for reconciliation," said the Nobel peace. "Is there still a lot of illegal immigration through the border (with Bangladesh)? We must stop otherwise the problem will never end," she added.

The 800,000 Rohingyas in Rakhine State confined, deprived of nationality by former Burmese junta, are seen by most as Burmese illegal migrants from Bangladesh, ostracism that feeds almost unanimous racism against them.
