The U.S. House of Representatives voted Wednesday, March 6th funding the federal government until the end of September, the first step toward a possible settlement of the crisis of a partial closure of public services from the end of March.
To date, the federal government has the right to operate only until March 27, according to a law passed in September of funding. Without a congressional vote before the deadline to extend this funding, non-essential public services would be forced to close, with hundreds of thousands of civil servants on leave without pay. This scenario has already occurred in late 1995 for twenty-one days in a memorable battle between President Bill Clinton and House Republican.
The House - Republican majority - voted Wednesday by 267 votes against 151 for state funding until the end of fiscal year 2013, September 30, based on the current level of expenditure . Next week the Senate, controlled by Democrats, is expected to vote on its own text. Both versions will then be "reconciled" before President Barack Obama can enact the law.
Tuesday, the U.S. executive said to be "deeply concerned about the consequences" of the text of the House but failed to make a veto threat immediately.
