Bangladesh¨: Τextile factories will be inspected

Seventy large retail chains have agreed Monday, July 8th with Bangladeshi unions to inspect all textile mills in the country and to carry out security work needed.

These major international brands, such as the French Carrefour and Tesco, have signed a legally binding agreement in April after the collapse of a nine-storey building, the Rana Plaza, on the outskirts of Dhaka. The accident, due to non-compliance with building standards, has eleven hundred and twenty nine dead.

"The first inspections at each plant will be completed no later than nine months and renovation programs and repairs will be implemented if necessary," said the steering committee of the project. Administration to oversee the implementation of the agreements will be installed in the Netherlands.

Bangladesh is the second largest exporter of clothing in the world and provides especially Western brands such as Walmart, Carrefour or H & M. Mainstay of the economy, the sector accounted for last year 80% of exports, amounting to $ 25 billion.
