United States: Russian hackers indicted for fraud of 300 million

Four Russian and Ukrainian hackers have been indicted in the United States for a large credit card fraud on the Internet, presented by federal prosecutors as the biggest case of cybercrime in the country's history.

Monitored for several years, the five defendants are accused of stealing at least 160 million credit card numbers, for a profit in excess of 300 million dollars (226 million euros). Among the companies targeted by hackers include Nasdaq, a company under license Visa, the low-cost airline JetBlue Airways or the French retail group Carrefour, according to the indictment released Thursday, July 25 in New Jersey.

The group hid its intrusions by disabling anti-virus software of their victims and storing their data on multiple platforms hacking. They sold the credit card numbers to receivers, which in turn put them on sale on online forums or "cashiers" who encoded numbers onto blank cards.

Two of the suspects, a Russian citizen, was arrested in June 2012 in the Netherlands. One was extradited in September, the other is awaiting transfer. Prosecutors did not provide information on the other three defendants.
