Mauritania has returned to the Libyan authorities Abdullah Al-Senussi, former head of the intelligence services of Muammar Gaddafi and Libya sought by the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced Wednesday, 5 September 2012, the Mauritanian state television without more details.
Information confirmed to AFP by an official source Mauritania. "He (Abdullah Al-Senussi) has actually left Mauritania," the source said shortly after the announcement by state television. The same official assured that "all legal proceedings concerning his extradition have been met and guarantees data usage by the Libyan government."

"The Mauritanian authorities call the former Libyan intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi in Libya," said the TV on a banner written in Arabic. A Mauritanian official source contacted by AFP simply spoke of "extradition", without specifying whether the Libyan Senoussi was in Mauritania, where he was arrested in March or had already left the country.

Brother of the former "Guide of the Revolution" Libyan Abdullah al-Senussi, a colonel, was among the first circle surrounding Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader deposed and killed in 2011. Wanted by the ICC and Libya, Al-Senussi was arrested in March in Mauritania.
He was indicted in May in Nouakchott to be entered illegally under a false identity in the country. Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz had recently said he would be considered before any decision on his possible extradition.
