At least 42 people were killed and 75 injured Wednesday, January 23, in a suicide bombing at a funeral in full a Shiite mosque in northern Iraq, said an official with the regional authorities.
The explosion targeted the mosque in Saida Al-Shuhada Khourmatou Tuz, 175 km north of Baghdad, was going on while the funeral for a relative of a politician, who was killed the day before.
"There are bodies in the husseiniyah [Shiite mosque]," said Abdul Challal, Mayor Touz Khourmatou, stating that "the bomber managed to enter and explode among the faithful bereaved." Among the injured were several tribal leaders and local officials, Hashem Ali Mukhtar, Vice President of Iraqi Turkmen Front and member of the Regional Council of Salahuddin.
WAVE OF ATTACKS SHIITES
The faithful attended the funeral of the brother of Mr Mukhtar, shot and killed the day before Touz Khourmatou. The attack has not been claimed, but Sunni extremists, including Al-Qaida-related, are regularly targeted politicians, the Shia community and security forces.
It follows a series of attacks in Baghdad and its environs which killed 26 people on Tuesday, ending a few days of calm after several waves of attacks last week. These attacks killed fourteen people last Thursday, and forty-nine persons yesterday.
This violence came as political institutions are almost paralyzed because of the political crisis in the country, where the Shiite prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki faces the wrath of the Sunni minority, Kurds and Shia members his government, who accuse him of monopolizing power and marginalized.
