Seven men convicted in Argentina for crimes against humanity

Argentine justice sentenced seven people to life imprisonment and six others were sentenced to three to 25 years in prison for crimes against humanity committed during the dictatorship (1976-1983), announced Saturday, February 16 Centre judicial information (ICJ), which depends on the Supreme Court. These former officials of the army, navy and prefects were found guilty of first degree murder, unlawful deprivation of liberty and torture of 69 people, abuses naval detachments in the city of Mar del Plata , 400 km south of Buenos Aires.

Under the judgment, signed on 15 February, sentenced to life imprisonment are General Alfredo Arrillaga and naval officers Juan Jose Lombardo, Raul Alberto Marino, Roberto Pertusio, Guiñazú Rafael, Jose and Mario Lodigiani Forbice all the retirement. Naval officers Justo Ortiz, Julio Angel Racedo Falcke and were sentenced to 25, 14 and 12 years imprisonment respectively, prefects and Juan Mosqueda Ariel Silva to 14 and 10 years and the naval officer Juan Guyot three years.

The Crown and the plaintiffs sought the annulment of the arrest enjoyed by 12 of the 13 convicted Alfredo Arrillaga itself being held in an ordinary prison. In this trial, brought by the victims' families, the NGO "The Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo", the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights of Mar del Plata and the state, 16 people in total appearing, but two of them died during the investigation of the case and a third has been declared unfit to stand trial for health reasons. The court will give the reasons for the award in mid-April.

Decades of procedures were completed in Argentina in 2003 with the repeal of the amnesty laws. Some 30,000 opponents have disappeared under the dictatorship, according to humanitarian organizations.
